Japanese Landscape Design
About
momiji design
momiji design is an independent landscape architecture practice specialising in authentic Japanese landscape design. From the restoration of century-old gardens to new build projects, momiji design applies traditional Japanese design methodology to create meticulously crafted landscapes and gardens.
Our challenge is to find the best design solutions to create stunning gardens in the UK and Europe using principles of traditional Japanese architecture and arts. When we begin to work with a client, we carefully assess and analyse the site, considering the climate, surrounding landscape and locally sourced materials, as well as the client’s inspiration for its users. A new build commission will require creative vision while drawing from history, which is one of our specialities. Europe’s longstanding fascination with Japanese culture and arts inspires our deepest involvement in the restoration of those remarkable Japanese gardens that were built in the beginning of the 20th century. We research the history of these gardens, and our restoration work ultimately aims to preserve the gardens’ storied past while instituting meaningful connections to the present.
We aim to work with clients whose projects aspire to authentically incorporate the philosophy and beauty of Japanese culture and design. Established in 2012, momiji design is comprised of Ai Hishii (Director), Professor Masao Fukuhara, Junya Matsukawa and Daijiro Mizuno. We often collaborate with expert designers, carpenters and architects who are also masters of their craft. Together with our clients, our skilled specialists and our expert team members, we focus on the unique creative challenges of every project to result in a masterfully collaborative garden that applies the timeless principles of Japanese architecture and landscaping.
